Description

This object is a reflection nebula located 3,300 light years away in the constellation Cepheus at a declination of +66 degrees. This nebula spans almost 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of about 9 light years.

The intense star light from a young open cluster of about 100 stars is responsible for illuminating the surrounding gas and dust clouds. The faint small reddish crescent shapes in this object are Herbig-Haro objects, ionized hydrogen gas compressed by shock waves from energetic jets streaming away from newborn stars. About 30 HH objects have been identified in this object.

I find this object to look both beautiful and a bit scary. I see several pairs of eyes staring at me through the mist. I love the subtle blue, orange, and pink colors. The shapes of the small reflection and HH nebulae are fascinating to me.

I also captured Ha subs for this object but the signal was smaller than I expected and it did not really add anything to the image.
