Lying some 7000 light years away in the constellation of Serpens, M16 is both a star cluster and a glowing nebula of ionized hydrogen.At its centre are the ‘pillars of creation’ famously imaged by the Hubble space telescope. This is a star-forming region in which dark globules of proto-stars can be seen in high resolution images.The pillars are several light-years long so would easily stretch from our solar system to our nearest stellar neighbours in the Alpha Centauri system.

Exposure times: Lum 5 hrs, SII 11.5 hrs, H-α 15 hrs, OIII 12.5 hrs. Channels mapped with a modified SHO (Hubble) palette.

Title: M16 The Eagle Nebula (reprocessed)

Description: This image is a re-working of my earlier image of 2019 using the original data but processed with the current improved toolset of PixInsight.

Comparing the two images reveals the superior sharpening and stretching results in the later version. This is especially noticeable in the central ‘Pillars of Creation’ area but also in the wisps of dark nebulosity in the upper part of the image.

As noted previously this is a narrowband image supplemented with Luminosity (clear) data to enhance the detail. It is presented in the (L)SHO Hubble palette with the narrowband channels balanced to prevent the Hα signal from overwhelming the others. Star colours have been improved using an HOO image from the same data.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
