Description

About 1 degree south of the Orion Nebula, lies NGC 1999, a small dust and gas-filled region with what appears to be a black empty area in the center.
Normally you don't see such large empty areas in the universe, so it was first assumed that it must be some dark dust blocking the dust/gas cloud.
In 2009, they looked at the hole with the infrared Herschel telescope and still saw that the hole was black. It was therefore assumed that there really was some material blocking it, or that it was an unknown phenomenon.
Subsequently, also in 2009, they looked at the area with the Atacama radio telescope, the Kitt Peak telescope and the Magellan telescopes, and found that the area is actually empty!
It is still not known why there is an apparently empty hole, but there are several theories, jets from young stars in the area have made the hole in the cloud, or perhaps strong radiation from a star.

The "hole" is about 1500 light years away, so it will be a while before we can fly up and take a closer look ;-)

Conditions last night were miserable, haze/thin clouds combined with an almost full moon put a damper on the light that could be captured.

approx. 20x120 sec H-alpha + 10x120 sec O-III
10" f/5 ATM telescope
Sky-Watcher NEQ6 Pro
ZWO ASI1600 MM Pro @-24°C/unity gain

Here is a quick treatment in Astroart, where I have used the HOO palette.
Definitely an object I will return to when (if) better weather arrives soon. But due to its low altitude (dec=-7°), you don't have much time during the season for it.
