Description

Image of Uranus taken on September 11, 2022. While waiting for culmination of Mars, and after imaging of Jupiter that night, I decided to dedicate some time to this distant planet and a difficult imaging target (angular diameter is only 3.7"). The planet was at its upper culmination at altitude ~47°. I captured ~10000 frames 100 ms each (~17 min integration time, camera gain 400) with Wratten red filter No. 25 (IR+R, 600 nm+) and stacked 2500 best frames. The seeing was good but not perfect (5/10), so the image looks blurry. Nevertherless, brigther north polar region is obvious. Brightness of Ariel is enhanced to indicate the planet's orinetation, which is "lying" on its back: the planet's rotation axis is almost orthogonal to the ecliptic plane.
