Description

M101 is a beautiful face-on spiral galaxy located 21 million light years from Earth. It's roughly 1.7x larger than the Milky Way, and contains an estimated one trillion stars. M101 has a large number of hydrogen alpha regions, which is where all the pink and red spots come from. The galaxies asymmetrical shape is caused by the gravity from nearby galaxies pulling on it. This pulling causes hydrogen gases to compress, triggering really strong star formation within the galaxy, even more so within the spiral arms.

Shooting at f/10 it's less than ideal. A mixture of slow speed and long focal length is a recipe for disaster. This image is over 40 hours of total integration time, but I also had to throw away roughly half of my total images. I was able to capture the HA regions using a narrowband filter, extracting the HA data and blending it into my RGB data.
