Description

The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula is located in the larger emission nebula IC 1396 (in the Cepheus Constellation), and it consists of a dense region of dust and gas. The elongated globule of dust resembles an elephant's trunk (hence the name) and It is located at a distance of 2,400 light years from Earth. The larger emission nebula is more than 100 light years across whereas the trunk stretches over a region of 20 light years.

The image was processed in SHO without stars, combining it with an HOO image to give a natural star colour.
