Description

Sunday afternoon, my wife says "Everyone says that the total eclipse is incredible. You NEED to go do it!  Go, just get in the car and find a hotel and go do it!".  So, that's what I did...

I did some preliminary weather checking and booked a night in Upper Sandusky (which is actually south of Sandusky Ohio) which was right on the line of totality.  Left the house in a rush packing what I hoped to be all my gear (very stripped down for this trip) and made the 7 hour drive to the hotel.  ZERO traffic.  Slept for 4 hours then checked the local cloud coverage that morning around 9am.  It looked clear at the time, but there was a cloud front moving in, so I could trust my tech and the cloud models and find a different location, or trust what I saw out the window and stay put.

Well, I trust technology!  So I looked for a location that would be clear at 3PM and it seemed like I was going to have to go to Indiana... so I picked a place called Rushville (because, given the current situation, it just made sense).  So I packed up again and got in the car, and sprinted my way to Rushville.
While driving, the skies were clear where I was coming from and cloudy where I was going (at that time), but I still trusted the models and knew they would cloud over where I was when I needed them to be clear.

I finally got to Rushville around 1:40 PM and found a farmer and a local sheriff "renting" out a big plot of land for a few people, so I joined the club.  Got my gear set up and ready, and everything was looking good. I got the camera in focus with the filter on, tested my bracketing setup, just needed to wait for totality.

Well, totality hits and I forget everything I was doing... Just looking at the sun in complete awe. I quickly removed the filter and got a couple of opening shots.  Of course I forgot I was holding the controller for the mount in my hand and I hit the "home" button on the controller and the mount starts tracking home!!!  AAAAHHH.  I was able to get it back to center on the sun but that was like 30 seconds lost.  The stress was crazy!  And in all of that, I forgot to refocus the camera after taking off the filter!  Still, it was such an incredible experience.  I'm hooked.
