Description

Omega Centauri (NGC5139) is a perennial favorite with astro photographers and visual observers alike. When first observed through a telescope, this wonderful cluster packs a visual punch that can hook one into a lifetime of observing and astronomical pursuits. It is always a delight to share a viewing of this object with new observers and watch their reaction when the cluster almost jumps out of the eyepiece.

Omega  Centauri is also a great target to use as a first light published “test” image for my recently commissioned new camera, a ZWO ASI2600 MM Pro fitted with a ZWO 36mm filter wheel and Astronomik filters. I have paired the camera with my Tak TSA120 as an upgrade from the QSI683 CCD that I’ve been running for about ten years. The QSI camera has served me well but with the developments in CMOS technology I figured that it was time to move on and try out a new camera. Apart from improvements in read noise, the ASI2600 delivers an improvement in image scale from 1.68” to 1.15” and a field of view of 2d over 1.5d for the QSI. I’m pleased with these results so far and I am looking forward to many more imaging projects with this new camera.

The data for this image were captured in one night with an almost full moon present at 94% illumination. A somewhat serendipitous endeavour as I hadn’t been planning an imaging run but upon seeing just how clear the night was I figured that it was worth trying to capture a bright target with the new camera. Omega Centauri was a good choice as I could easily run off a series of 60 second subs in the one night. As it turned out, the seeing was all over the place so I finished up dumping about 30% of the data captured but still finished up with enough to assemble this image.

Revision B (and mouse over) is a zoomed in version to take a peek closer at the core of the cluster.
