Description

The image shows a pseudo-color representation of Messier 101 allowing for identifying specific types of emission. It was calculated from five different spectral channels: R, G, B, Hα, and OIII. The pseudo-color channels are defined as follows.

R: total luminance of [green-blue luminance from RGB minus weighted OIII] plus [red luminance from RGB minus weighted Hα], i.e. the pseudo red channel shows all black-body radiation (= continuum) originating from stars.

G: Hα minus weighted red, i.e., the continuum subtracted Hα-emission

B: OIII minus weighted green-blue luminance, i.e., the continuum subtracted OIII-emission

Therefore, green respresents dominant Hα-emission, blue dominant OIII-emission, red the stars (saturated foreground stars are white). Mixed colors mean mixture of the respective effects, i.e. cyan = mixed Hα- and OIII-emission, yellow = stars in a Hα-region etc.
