Description

I was leaving to join two friends to play a cold round of running  disc golf (starting temp 6F with wind chill at -10F). On my way to the course, I looked up and to my heart's glee,  I saw my first sun dog!!! I jumped out took a few cell shots and hurried to the course in hope of getting a shot with a basket and the sun dog.

A sun dog is a atmospheric occurrence that causes one or two bright spots to appear at 22 degrees on either side of the sun. These two spots form a halo of sorts. This phenomenon occurs when suspended ice crystals act like prisms bending the light to the 22 degree arc. Other crystal halos can also be formed other than the snow dog seen from my vantage point .
