Description

Image of the region around the Apollo 11 landing site (21st July 1969) on the southern edge of the Sea of Tranquillity. 50 years ago (to the minute of the time stamp on this image Australian AEST) the Eagle Lunar Module was on the lunar surface, with Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin on board preparing for their lift-off from the lunar surface to rendezvous with Michael Collins in the orbiting Command Module. Armstrong and Aldrin were on the lunar surface for a total of 21 hours 37 minutes. The craters Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin to the north of the landing site were named in their honour. The Apollo 11 landing site lies around 50km north of Moltke crater. Sabine and Ritter craters are around 30km in diameter. I was lucky to get a break in the weather to catch this on the anniversary night of the Apollo landing. Imaged from Lysterfield in Melbourne: Skywatcher 8 inch/f5, 5x Televue Powermate, ASI224mc.
