Description

The beautiful conjunction of comet C/2020 V2 (ZTF) with the triplet of spiral galaxies in the constellation of Grus is one of those occasions when I allow myself to use a remote telescope ;-)

Comet C/2020 V2 (ZTF) was well visible from Poland in early 2023. However, now it is solely observable in the southern skies, and we won't be able to see it from Poland anymore. At the time of capturing the image, it was situated 515 million kilometers away from Earth. The distance to the galaxies that it seemingly passed by in the sky is approximately 90 million light-years.

The photographs were taken on December 14, 2023, using telescopes from the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. I employed two telescopes with different focal lengths to present the comet in two interesting perspectives:

- T10 - Takahashi TOA F/6.8, SBIG STX-16803 Mono, 32x90 seconds.
- T59 - Planewave Instruments 20" CDK Celestron F/6.8, FLI Proline 16803 Mono, 27x90 seconds.

It's worth noting the faint background galaxies in the image captured by the T59 telescope; they aren't even present in the PGC catalog.
