Description

This is a four panel mosaic taken of the area surrounding the emission nebula NGC6188 located in the constellation of Ara (the Altar). I've oriented the image slightly differently to most presentations of this area as I like the large expanse of nebulosity that looks like a giant pair of wings extended through space. The image has been compiled from data taken with RGB, Ha and Luminance filters captured with a Tak TSA120 OTA and QSI683 CCD camera. To capture the full expanse of this area required a four panel mosaic giving a FOV of about 2.5 x 2 degrees. The distinct, rounded rectangle shaped object on the right of the image is the bipolar emission nebulae NGC6164/5 and lies in the constellation of Norma. The object has a surrounding halo which is better captured with narrowband filters making it look similar in appearance to a planetary nebula. I think that this field presents best from an aesthetic perspective with additional data from OIII and SII narrowband filters. This will have to wait until next year (2023) given the continuing cloudy and wet conditions here on the east coast of Oz. For interest, a starless version of the image has been included as the mouse over as it provides a different perspective of the image.
