Description

The Cone nebula located in the winter constellation of the UNICORN, consists of a large cloud of hydrogen ionized by ultraviolet radiation emitted by the stars that make up the star cluster NGC2264, called "Christmas Tree". On the top of the tree is located vertex of the "Cone" nebula.

This nebula is a part of a vast dark nebula, made up of powders and molecular hydrogen, which stands out on the underlying emission nebula and recognizable by its typical reddish color.

It was first observed by the English astronomer William Herschel on December 26, 1785 and is about 2700 light years away from Earth.
