Description

M83 is a grand design spiral galaxy ~15M ly away in the southern sky thats oriented pretty well 'face on' to us, which means you must photograph it!  It also has many very active star forming regions giving the Ha filter some great value add to the final picture.

First time in about 2 years from memory we got a straight run of 8 nights of cloud free sky and it coincided with a new moon, so I had to give a broadband target a go.  Whilst I dont regret the acquisition time, I am reminded about the painful truth of preprocessing very large batches of files in pixinsight , and the number of subs (i.e. gigabytes) you need from a bortle 6 sky to get half decent snr. On the upside, employed exactly zero noise reduction in post on this image.  All dithering and dark frames baby!

Prepared in LHaRGB.  Also used a GHS for the first time in this image via pixmath which really helped control background intensity
