Description

Messier 35 is an open cluster in Gemini with an angular size of 28 arc minutes at a distance of 3,870 l.y. and an apparent aggregate magnitude of 5.1. It is relatively young open cluster of bluish-white stars with an estimated age of 150 million years; its brightest member is magnitude 8.18, and it is classified as a Trumpler Type III 2m open cluster.

To the immediate southwest of M35 lies the older open cluster NGC 2158 with an angular size of 5 arc minutes at a distance of 11,000 l.y. and apprent magnitude 8.6, whose brightest member is magnitude 12.40. Although at first glance easily mistaken as a globular cluster, NGC 2158 is a Trumpler Type II 3 r open cluster with an estimated age of 2 billion years, and is markegly yellower in color than M35. Although it is ~ six times further away than M35, it occupies approximtaely the same volume of space, and at a similar distance, would be one of the finest open clusters in the sky.

The double star Otto Struve 134 consists of a beautiful yellowish-orange primary mag. 7.3 and a fainter, light purple secondary mag. 9.1 with a separation of 31 arc seconds at P.A. 188. It can be seen on the north edge of M35, opposite to NGC 2158, and lies at the end of a prominent, arcuate chain of stars.
