Description

My first SHO image two years ago was the Statue of Liberty nebula.  And it was a horrendous green thing.  Nevertheless, my AB friends were generous in their encouragement and I wasn't too downhearted.

My next Statue of Liberty image was better, and I received further encouraging words from AB.  At that point I resolved to take a new image of the Status of Liberty every year as test of my ongoing observation and processing skills.

For this year's attempt I reverted back to my RC8, with which I had taken my previous images) and manual focussing.

In total I obtained 9 hours integration over a couple of mostly-moonlight lights.    The new RC Astro tools also made a huge difference to the post-processing, and I am pleased with the result. Although no doubt, I will look back on this a year later and, once again, be dissatisfied with the result.

I tried to avoid the cyan/gold look, using a mix of the Foraxx SHO recipe and standard Hubble palette.   I didn't touch hue (at all) or saturation much, to keep the colours from becoming too intense.  The biggest difference, no doubt, is BXT.   It breathes new life into the detail that is possible at 1600mm, on a very average (4arcsec) seeing site.    If last year was that year of the f3.2 8inch Hypergraph, I suspect this year will be that of the f8 8inch RC.

Your feedback would once again, be welcome.  At this stage, I am also seriously considering whether I need to invest (financially and philosophically) in Photoshop, in order to "dodge in" some of the lower SNR areas.  Up until now, I have been very opposed to this sort of image manipulation, but perhaps it is the next step.  After all, I am not afraid to use CloneStamp (in moderation).
