Description

NGC 4535 is the face on galaxy in this image. It is about 54 million light years from earth and a member of the Virgo cluster. It is sometimes referred to as the Lost Galaxy due to its ghostly appearance in the eyepiece of a small telescope. NGC 4526 is the bright edge-on lenticular galaxy above - also a member of the Virgo group and about 55 million light years away. They make a fascinating pair along with other numerous smaller galaxies. I used a blue mask on 4535 (clone stamping our everything else in the mask) and a red mask on 4526 and a few of the other smaller galaxies (again clone stamping out everything else). That way I could emphasize the blue in 4535 and the red in the hallow around 4526. I also use a technique recommended by Ron Brecher of Masters of Pixinsight - using the output mask from Dark Structure Enhance to brighten up the areas DSE has highlighted. This does not reverse DSE, it just makes the dark structures more contrasty and more visible. I think I will use a lot more in the future.
