Description

This is an image of the Rosette Nebula (NGC2244) take this morning in NB using the HOO palette. The Rosette Nebula located in the constellation Monoceros (The Unicorn) is a large cloud of hydrogen gas and dust that is closely associated with the open cluster NGC 2244 which you can see in the center of the image. The stars forming the open cluster were formed from the nebula's matter in the last 5 million years.

The Rosette (or Rosetta) Nebula’s appearance in optical light resembles a rose flower or the rosette, the stylized flower design used in sculptural objects since ancient times, and the nebula was named after the design. The nebula is also called the 'Skull' because it too resembles the human skull.

The Rosette Nebula is approximately 5200 Light Years from earth  and you can the open cluster NGC 2244 with in binoculars. In order to observe the nebula you will need a telescope capable of low magnification with good viewing with minimum light pollution.

I plan on capturing more data of the next couple of weeks including SII. The image was originally processed with Astro Pixel Processor but I plan to process with PixInsight soon.
