Description

IC 405 is a beautiful emission and reflection nebula seen in the Constellation Auriga. It is approximately 1500 light years from Earth and has a very interesting origin. This image is the central turbulent region of this very large nebula. It is the result of interaction with the runaway star AE Aurigae embedded near the center of the nebula. This particular star originated in the Orion area. A near catastrophic interaction with another nearby large star (MU Columbae) occurred 2-3 million years ago. As a result of this interaction both stars were flung from the Orion area and sent crashing through space as rogue stars.  MU Columbae can currently be found approximately 66 degrees away from this area in our sky.

The January 2024 data was from my home in Idaho. The February data was from a dark sky site in Southern Utah. I chose this framing and orientation based on some of the beautiful "Fire and Ice" versions of this nebula I have seen here on Astrobin.
