Description

The dust curtain in Cepheus

A beloved child has many names, they say, and this object must be loved by many because it has many names. Most of this "dust curtain" goes under the name LDN 1217, the lower parts go under LDN 1219. The entire dusty area to the left goes under LBN 528. The blue reflection nebula at the top VdB152, and the dark dust directly below is LBN 531.

This exiting cloud is located in the constellation Cepheus and contains some interesting things. The blue nebula is caused by dust reflected from the bluish star BD-69 1231. The research says that the BD star does not belong to the nebula itself, but it has drifted there, and right now it shines nicely for us hobby photographers before it drifts on its way.

A small red dot is visible in the upper right of the dark nebula, this is the Herbig Haro object HH 450, a jet emitted from a newly formed star. I wish it was more visible here, but then I probably need better resolution and a bigger telescope. The darkest area is called LBN528 and is a thick knot of dust that is dense enough to prevent light from background stars from shining through.

The next striking object is in the lower right corner of the image and has been given the exciting name Dengel-Hartl 5 but better known as LBN 538. This is a planetary nebula which should be a target in itself for those with a long focal length. The object would definitely have come out better if I had used narrowband filters Ha and OIII.

The long red filaments seen in the image are parts of the supernova remnant SNR 110.3+11.3. There are also a number of PGC galaxies in the image if you zoom in.

One galaxy that I could not find the name on is the reclassified Herbig-Haro object HH 450x.
