Description

This pair of magnitude 13 spiral galaxies is located in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +23 degrees.

Although the disks of these 2 galaxies are very different, their actual sizes are identical.  Both are a large 140,000 light years in diameter.  They are located too far apart to be interacting.

NGC 7489 is at upper left, located 230 million light years away.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.   The disk, which is somewhat disturbed, is about 30 degrees from edge-on in our view.  Numerous small Milky stars are superimposed over the galaxy.

IC 5285 is at lower right, located 280 million light years away.  This is a fascinating double ring galaxy.  Our view of this disk is about halfway between face-on and edge-on.  It is interesting to me that the circumferential ring is not oval like the inner one.
