Description

A turbulent stream of gas and dust cuts a swathe through the Carina Nebula.
Top left is the Keyhole Nebula.
Below that a  a  Bok Globule, humorously known as The Defiant Finger.

Light can be seen radiating off the edges of the globule; this is especially visible in the southern tip, where the "finger" is. It is thought that the Defiant Finger is being ionized by the bright Wolf–Rayet star WR 25, and/or Trumpler 16-244, a bright blue supergiant. It has a mass of at least 6 M☉, and stars may be forming within it.

Another Bok Globule has been named "The Caterpillar"

Close to the centre is Mystic Mountain.
NGC_3372_Mystic_Mountain_Zoom_20230413.jpg
Mystic Mountain contains multiple Herbig–Haro objects where nascent stars are firing off jets of gas which interact with surrounding clouds of gas and dust. This region is about 7,500 light-years (2,300 parsecs) away from Earth. The pillar measures around three light-years in height (190,000 astronomical units).[1] The name was influenced by the works of H. P. Lovecraft.[4]
