Description

This photo, like most of them, has a story. My wife and I wanted to try Minami Izu as a location, which is about four hours south of where we live. Unfortunately the southernmost point turned out to be closed at night, so we wound up at Tsumekizaki. Tsumekizaki has a beautiful lighthouse, which she got some fabulous photos of with the Milky Way. Better for her, but the skies aren't quite as dark as that southernmost point.
I was trying to work with two scopes, my red cat and the borrowed storm trooper, a vixen refractor. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the storm trooper polar aligned properly. But with the red cat this is my first real production guided astrophoto. It was pretty windy and there wasn't really good shelter from the wind, but with the guiding I managed mostly to stay within 4 to 8 arc seconds using 0.5sec guide exposures. That's 2 to 3 pixels at this resolution. I was using the Asiair Plus all sky polar alignment which told me I was within about one arc minute of the pole, but in fact I wound up with a noticeable amount of drift over 3 1/2 hours. The individual subs look pretty good, though. My Canon DSLR still isn't Astro modded, so I knew the seagull wouldn't come out quite as bright and vibrant as I would like. But for my first attempt on this target I'm pretty pleased.
Processing is stacking, background correction, star color correction and star reduction at 75% in Astro Pixel Processor, then accept APP's default stretch, and two light stretches to bring up the middle part and dark in the background in Gimp, then a crop to about half the total frame.
Now, the story. About 545 in the morning I woke up from a nap in the car and went to check on my equipment. Unfortunately, I tripped on a piece of uneven pavement, fell down, and hurt my arm. I was pretty sure I had broken in two places, but it eventually turned out I had only broken a finger and otherwise bruised things. Since all the equipment was still deployed, this meant my wife had to disassemble and pack everything for me. Boy, I'm grateful she was with me.
This is 180 subs, downselected from 200.
