Description

Abell 85 is a supernova remnant in Cassiopeia. It is also a radio source (CTB-1). Abell 85 is a quite a dark object that emits light in the emission colors of hydrogen (Ha), sulfur (SII) and oxygen (OIII). The OIII emission is quite weak and the brighter structures are built up by SII and Ha. While SII is not as present in the background as Ha the brighter locations of the two emission colors are more or less identical.

To show the spatial distribution of the light emitting gases three different color palettes were used. The image shows the total luminance (Ha+SII+OIII), an (Ha+SII)OO, an SHO palette and an HSO version. The stars are shown in their original colors.
