Description

While processing an imaging session of the California Nebula, I noticed a small bright line directly in the center of my framing. After inspecting the series of subframes, I knew I had an asteroid transit, but didn't know what it was. I've spent the past two weeks blinking, processing, and learning new techniques to process and present asteroid transits in a dynamic and accurate form, with this as the (probably) final result.

Note that while there are some frames out of order in the series, they are documented correctly in the annotations in the bottom left, which was one of the most important aspects of what I was trying to represent. However, at this time I am uninterested in going back and fixing it, as the time to batch process over 700 frames repeatedly over the past few weeks has started wearing on me.

In the course of my studies on processing, I was trying to find a way to identify what I had found. I eventually came upon the AnnotateImage script in PixInsight, which was able to identify the object as Asteroid 760 Massinga, a 13.26 magnitude, main belt asteroid discovered in 1913.

I'm hoping to continue to use and refine the techniques I've used in this project to better represent other minor planet activities captured in the course of imaging the cosmos.
