Third time is the charm! I was finally able to capture our newest comet, C/2023 P1 Nishimura, around 5:30am today just before the sunrise washed out the tail. What a spectacular sight to see this rare green beauty show up on my camera screen!

------------
C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) is a long-period comet discovered by Japanese amateur astronomer Hideo Nishimura on 12 August 2023. With an observation arc of seven months, the orbital period of the comet is estimated to be 435 years. Computation of its orbit showed it would make its closest approach to Earth on 12 September at a distance of 78m miles (125m km), just five days ahead of its closest approach to the sun.

Hideo Nishimura detected a bright object very close to the Sun. No one had seen it before because the object was lost in our star’s glare. And, exciting news, it turned out to be a brand-new bright comet! On August 15, the Minor Planet Center officially confirmed the discovery and named the comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura).
