Description

NGC 3293, also known as the Gem Cluster, is an open star cluster located in the Carina constellation. The cluster consists of more than 100 stars brighter than 14th magnitude in a 10 arc minute field. The brightest of these stars are blue supergiants with apparent magnitudes of 6.5 and 6.7. There is also a 7th magnitude pulsating red supergiant called V361 Carinae. NGC 3293 is estimated to be a very young cluster, only about 10 million years old. It is located at a distance of about 8,400 light-years from Earth.
