Description

Simeis 57 is an optically bright nebula in the Cygnus X region. It was first catalogued in the 1950s by astronomers working in the Simeiz Observatory (Ukraine) as the 57th object in a catalogue containing 306 HII regions. The Propeller Nebula is often incorrectly referred to as DWB 111, however DWB 111 identifies the propeller's southern arm, while the northern arm was cataloged as DWB 119. The DWB catalogue contains 109 emission nebulae related to the Cygnus X star forming region. It was published in 1969 by three astronomers, H. R. Dickel, H. Wendker and J. H. Bieritz . Very little is known about the Propeller Nebula, even its distance is undetermined yet. . The stars or other sources responsible for the ionisation of the gas are also yet to be identified.
