Description

This image depicts the complexity of the core of M42, taken from my backyard with a new narrowband filter which isolates OIII and Hydrogen alpha. Perhaps more art than science, it does reflect the actual ‘scientific’ colours in an OIII core giving way to hydrogen emission clouds. It reflects my novice efforts to process and blend layers in Startools, but does suggest the 3D structure of the nebula.

I wanted to share it, warts and all (no darks or flats applied), as it was my first 15 minute exposure, blended with 2x 11s to preserve the trapezium that energises this extraordinary nebula.

Taken with my 8”SCT, a 0.5x focal reducer on DSI-2C camera with Optolong L-enhance dualband filter. With a replacement motor/gearbox installed, I look forward to seeing what these ageing LX scopes are really capable of...
