Description

The SHO palette evokes the colors of a Swallowtail butterfly,  and in this orientation, the bright star Sadr, or Gamma Cygni (γ Cyg),  poses as a stand in flower head.  Sadr itself is the second brightest star in Cygnus after Deneb, and it is easy to recognize with the  naked eye as a magnitude 2.2 star that forms the central crossing point of the Northern Cross asterism.  Though they are in the same line of sight, Sadr is much closer at approximately 1,800 ly from Earth, whereas the Butterfly Nebula itself is approximately 4,000 ly away. Aside from a powerful emission nebula of ionized sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen, the Butterfly Nebula (IC 1318) also contains striking interspersed  dark  interstellar dust forming the body of the butterfly.

Title: A little less green, a little more contrast

Description: As is so often the case, the image looks different on a large iMac screen and then online once uploaded - in this case, the original image had a greenish tinge and appeared more washed out than I would have liked, so this was adjusted to address those features.
