Description

The Horsehead Nebula, a dark dust cloud that is silhouetted against the large Orion Molecular Cloud
Complex, IC 434,is famous as it is one of the most recognizable formations in our Milky Way. It was first
recorded by Williamina Fleming in 1888 and later was formally described by E.E. Barnard. It lies some
1,375 ly away.

The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) is part of the Orion Cloud Complex, a very active star-forming region in
Orion. The Flame Nebula hosts dark dust bands (like the Horsehead Nebula) that give it its distinctive
“flame” appearance. It is an emission nebula that is being made to glow by the ultra-violet light being
emitted by the bright star, Alnitak (ζ Ori, above or West of the nebula), and other very hot stars.

The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex is a huge gas and dust cloud that extends much further than the
bright regions shown here. This can be inferred by the haze surrounding the bright background
stars - their light illuminates the foreground gas and dust. The hot stars embedded within this nebula
sculpt it into folds and streaks making it a visually interesting object.
