Description

Thor's Helmet - NGC 2359

--------------------

I revisited this amazing object and collected 13 hours of data on it last February.

Thor's Helmet is a nebula in the constellation Canis Major, 12,000 light-years away.

It's around 30 light-years across and the central bubble expands at speeds ranging between 10 - 30 km/sec, due to strong radiation winds emitted by the central star in the nebula (WR7).

This central star is a rare Wolf-Rayet type star (16x more massive than our Sun), which loses mass via these radiation winds at the rate of around 10x the mass of Earth per year and will eventually explode as a supernova!
