Description

Two nights ago, we had the most exciting astronomical experience ever. An electricity black-out 8 PM which lasted eight hours. At the beginning, we could see at least twice the number of stars than usual and after adaptation about 3 times that of our estimated average Bortle 4 sky. So I rushed to roll out the mobile gear and set it up, right in time for clouds coming about to spoil this unique opportunity (as usual, within an hour of setup). If clouds hadn't done it this time, the humity would have. In virtually no time all surfaces were, yes, wet. Without electricity, no fan, but a handheld Japanese "uchiwa" prevented the worst with untamed physical power.

The short integration time of the image attests and stresses the importance of a clear, dark sky for which to emulate people are spending fortunes for filters, traveling, etc. Neighbors who stepped out into the dark uttered a "wow", when looking up before they got into their AC equipped cars and drove away cooled.

The image in the revision was supposed to capture IC4592, the Blue Horsehead Nebula around the star Jabbah, but would need a lot more integration even under true darkness. While the temperature was 30°C @85%RH, the DSLR sensor must have assumed over 35°C, yet no serious noise issues.

The cause of the black-out was a mouse. It was not drilled.
