This bright, cup shaped nebula in the constellation Cygnus is Sh2-101, aka the Tulip Nebula. It is part of an extended region of dense interstellar gas that contains some of the richest star forming regions near our solar system. Sh2-101 itself is dense with ionized hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, energized by the nearby Cygnus OB3 association. OB associations are groupings of O- and B-type stars...since these stars are short lived they are indicative of recent star formation.

Just above and to the right of the Tulip's bowl is an arc of blue ionized oxygen. This structure is the bow shock formed by a jet of high energy matter emitted by the Cygnus X-1 black hole system. Cyg X-1, the first black hole positively identified, is approximately 15 solar masses, and is locked in a tight 5.6 day orbit with a blue-white supergiant star of approximately 40 solar masses (HDE 226868). The enormous gravity of the black hole pulls matter from its companion into an accretion disk. Some of this matter is ejected in two opposing jets, which create a jet-blown nebula when they encounter interstellar gas. While we can't see the black hole, we can see the blue companion HDE 226868 (below the blue arc is a pair of fairly bright stars...HDE 226868 is the one to the lower right).
