Description

I attempted a go-to for NGC 7468, and although this did not quite get me to the target, it brought me to this field just north of it. I noticed the elongated smudge in the lower left corner, no doubt an edge-on galaxy, and I was captivated. Faint, barely noticeable galaxies like this inspire feelings of reverent awe within me.This particular edge-on galaxy might contain billions, perhaps even hundreds of billions of stars, yet few people on Earth care about, or are even aware of its existence. Ignoring it would have seemed almost disrespectful to me, and I felt obligated to take a photo of it. How far away must it be for it to appear so faint? Peppered throughout this image are a number of other fuzzies that are likely galaxies as well. This picture is a great example of how much there is out there that we know so little about! Upon later research using SkySafari, I found that the edge-on galaxy is PGC 1514392 and lies an estimated 100 million light-years away. Also obvious is PGC 1515053, the fuzzy spot just to the lower-right of center.
