Description

This image captures an obscure planetary nebula, Weinberger 1-4, located in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +8 degrees. I could find no detailed information on this object.

We are looking at the PN from an almost side-on view, about 25 degrees from side-on by my estimate. This is an older two lobed bi-polar nebula, with the lobes pointing up and down. Both lobes have already burst out and are now fading away. The torus around the constricted waist of the nebula stands out, appearing as a bright red horizontal oval.

This nebula is similar in structure to a number of PNs, including M76. A side-by-side view of these 2 objects is attached in Revision D. If these 2 objects are a similar size (3 light years in length), than We 1-4 is about 3 times further away at 9000 light years. At this greater distance, only the brighter portions of a nebula like M76 would show up, which is what we see in We 1-4.
