Description

This object is a rarely imaged globular cluster located 50,000 light years away in the constellation of Ophiuchus at a declination of -18 degrees. The cluster spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 150 light years.

This cluster is located only 1.5 degrees from the more celebrated (and 0.5 magnitude brighter) cluster M9. This cluster is twice as far away as M9, located on the other side of the Milky Way. Because of the large distance, the cluster brightness is decreased (reddened) by 0.2 magnitudes. It is surprising to me that most of the cluster stars are able to be resolved at this distance and low latitude.
