In celebration of the
new paper on the properties of
@Marcel Drechsler,
@Yann SAINTY, and
@Xavier Strottner's discovery, the M31 Oiii arc SDSO-1, I figured I would go ahead and reprocess my own photograph of the object. This time much improved after a year of working hard on improving my own processing! I was able to show some of the Oiii streamers inside of m31 which I was not able to process properly last year.
The new paper presents a favored conclusion that the arc is extragalactic in nature! It is quite an interesting read on a mystery that is still unfolding. The potential options for an explanation were a SNR, a close PN, or a bow shock nebula. All the other possible explanations are full of holes as you will read in the paper.
This discovery is a very special one, both for me personally and for wide-field narrowband astronomy in general. It is the true symbol of how little is still known about our universe, and how people armed with consumer telescope equipment are able to explore it in ways which have never been possible.
