Description

Some vital statistics on this small bright planetary nebula, with good distance data from Gaia mission parallax measurements:

Vy1-1 (PN G118.0-08.6)
Size: 11 x 11 arcsec (0.9 ly across)
Magnitude: 12.60(V)
Distance: 16,616 ly
Abs Mag=-0.94

The central star is also very bright for its distance:

Gaia DR3 419326659360627968
Magnitude: 14.16(V)
Distance: 16,616 ly
Abs Mag=0.63

A star that has approached white dwarf stage would have an absolute magnitude of a much dimmer 10th magnitude. Since the nebula is small (0.9 light years across), this points to the nebula being pretty young, as an older nebula would be larger than 1.5 light years. The central star might be a binary, making it a lot brighter than just a lone white dwarf, or the Gaia magnitude data for the star might be muddled by the brightness of the surrounding nebula.

I combined IR/UV Cut and duoband (a OIII/Ha/Hb triband filter) filter data for the nebula and the star colors just from the IR/UV cut filter data. The images were live-stacked IRCut data was collected using 4 second live-stacked subs while duoband data was collected using live-stacked 3 second subs.
