Description

This image shows the Spiral Flame Nebula in the north-western part of the Vela SNR complex. Twisted filaments of ionised oxygen provide a contrast with ionised hydrogen of the Gum 18 emission nebula in the background.

The Vela SNR is the remnant of a massive star that exploded around 12000 years ago, towards the end of The Stone Age. It spans approximately 8 degrees by 8 degrees, which is about 16 times the apparent diameter of our Moon. Shockwaves have yielded a variety of complex shapes with associated nicknames.

Data for the image was captured across several nights in January and February 2024, with narrowband stacks blended using the HOO palette. It's great to be spending time under the stars again after focusing on some automotive projects recently.

Thanks for looking and Warm Wishes!
