Description

Markarian's Chain is a string of galaxies near the centre of the Virgo cluster. The largest, and central, member of the cluster is M87 which is just out of shot below this image. Galaxies in the chain were discovered by Messier and Herschel in the 18th and 19th centuries and the chain is now named after Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the 1960s. In the centre of the chain is a pair of interacting galaxies known as "Markarian's Eyes".
