Description

This is an SHO narrowband image of the Seagull Nebula (IC2177), 3,700 light years from Earth. I have sourced the following information from Astrobin and other sources. It is a vast star-forming region, the "wings" span about 200 light years tip-to-tip. Many of the stars in this region are massive and hot. On the lower left there is an incredible structure VdB 95, a reflection nebula caused by a supernova, with a huge star HIP34301 which has created a Bow Shock Wave (BSW), clearly visible. I have included an image annotation to highlight the individual structures. Sh2-292 is the “Seagull Head”  and is both an emission nebula and a reflection nebula. The luminous star HD53367 is the “eye”, it is 20 times more massive than our sun. Sh2-296 is the “wings of the Seagull”, and NGC2327 is a small reflection nebula apparently often mistakenly called the Seagull Nebula.  This image was created using PixInsight in a training session with Ron Brecher.
