Description

Update (2024-03-24):
I cross-referenced this image with the entire SIMBAD and NED database and the total count is now:
  • 1021 galaxies or active galaxy nuclei
  • 9 active galaxy nuclei candidates
  • 3 Seyfert galaxies
  • 18 quasars
  • 8 quasar candidates
  • 1 planetary nebula
  • ≥1 supernova

Mousing over the image removes the annotations.

I've also attached a list of all tagged items here: 2024-2-19 Abell1656 (Coma Cluster) Count.pdf

Original Post:
There are 344 confirmed galaxies in this one image... and quite a few more I think I can see that are not confirmed (no database entries available for them at least). And all of them are within an area of sky about the width of your thumb when held at arm's length!

Mouse over the image to see them at a completely-illegible font size, or just open Revision B (which is somewhat more legible).

The faintest I found is PGC 126827 in the middle/far-right, with a magnitude of 18.68. Not bad for a 5-inch telescope in Bortle 6 skies! An entire galaxy with a magnitude 5x fainter than Charon!
