Description

LDN 1270 is a pillar of dust and ionized gas located within the larger emission nebula, CED 214 and in the constellation Cepheus.  These pillars exist as stellar nurseries, analogous to the well known Pillars of Creation.  These structures are quite commonly observed within large emission nebulae but much less grand than those found within M16.  For a reference of scale, the pillars of LDN 1270 span a length of approximately 300” in comparison with the Pillars of Creation at 400”.  The existence of stellar nurseries such as LDN 1270 is a transient one.  The birth of new stars consumes these pillars, while simultaneously eroding them through photoevaporation.  In all likelihood, these pillars are no longer present.  Astronomical images such as this one serve as an opportunity to gaze into the past; observing the universe as it once was.
