Description

This is a 30 second image of C/2022 E3(ZTF) in relatively close proximity to Mars.   I had originally planned to take a series of images and integrate them using comet integration techniques but I was only able to get a few frames that weren't terribly obscured by clouds.  This image was created from the best frame I was able to capture.   I decided to do the best I could to process the comet and Mars in this single 30 second image.  This meant brightening the comet and comet tail as best as possible and reducing the overwhelming brightness of Mars in the single frame.   I used NoiseXterminator initially in PixInsight and then used Topaz DeNoise AI once I had transferred the image to Photoshop and had increased the brightness of the comet.  In Photoshop I used two different layers (and associated masks) to boost the visibility of the comet and reduce the brightness of Mars.   I was happy to have gotten any frames at all and to have been able to tease out enough  information to document the relatively close pass of the two objects.  As with most of my comet images, I used the AP92 f6.65 Stowaway with a .8X reducer to  open the field of view and ensure I could capture both bodies in the same frame.   I was frankly surprised, though,  that I was able to easily see the green in the comet as well as some amount of tail in a single 30 second frame.   For my purposes, while not nearly perfect, this image documents this interesting event that I could have easily missed and almost did not attempt to process.
