Description

11,000 years ago, a star in constellation Vela went supernova and created this intricate structure. This image highlights a small part of the larger nebula. The shockwaves produced by the supernova compressed and shaped the surrounding gas and dust, creating long, narrow filaments. These filaments are ionized and glow due to interactions with the intense radiation from the neutron star at the center of the nebula. The structure in this image looks much like the frequently photographed Pencil Nebula (NGC 2736).
