Description

If you read the accessories you saw that I used my old AVX mount, which I had to free from the cobb webs. And it needed as well some patch work on the power supply, but I got it half way done, good enough to see if I can get this one running with SGP. And to my surprise, it worked right out of the box, and now of course I am even more disappointed about the Losmandy mount. It gave up on me by going crazy on the dec axis, slewed with full speed endlessly (destroyed with that the power supply cable), was not usable anymore. And after some message exchange on the Gemini forum it can be deducted: the controller is malfunctioning. Well, if that would be all, I would have said: can happen, nothing lasts forever. But now that I see how the AVX mount is actually working with SGP I have to say: the Losmandy mount was from the beginning a huge disappointment. I achieve with the AVX the same kind of (not great) guiding, maybe even better. And SGP dials in via Plate Solving in 2 steps, while the Losmandy needed always 4 as a minimum, sometimes not even getting there at all. And when I remember back I believe it was always like that, so I cannot say that I destroyed it with my adjustment trials.

With that all said, I can use at least my old trustworthy AVX mount with the Explore Scientific until a new mount is in the house. And right now new mounts are hard to come by, might take a while.

The weather was great (and will be the next 7 days!) so I could get some data in the last nights. M106 was the choice, at least large enough for my 714mm. I actually like NGC4217 in the lower right corner very much as well!
