Description

Sun Spots (20221218) - still awful seeing

One icy cold, clear and cloudless day after five damp, overcast and foggy days. Though the bare eye spots clear and crisp mountain tops, and snow covered north faces, the seeing is again at least as bad as it was five days ago. Having had some success last time with processing 1000 washy and blurred images and facing the next longer bad weather period ahead over the holidays, I decide to give it a try.

Having only 30 minutes left before the Sun disappears behind the birch trees, I hurry up to setup everything and start capturing. 10 minutes later I am ready to start my capturing session with FireCapture on my nice little Astroberry (Raspberry Pi 4). As expected, the SER videos look disappointing at best.

After converting the SER to AVI  via PIPP, I stack the suggested selection of 5% from 1000 images for the first result with the very fine Planetary System Stacker (PSS). The TIFF gets sharpening and histogram adjustments in ImPPG, which is an excellent piece of software for the Sun, the Moon and the planetary post processing.

The final result is shown here. Please compare version B for an impression of the awful seeing.
