Description

NGC55 is a barred spiral galaxy roughly 6.5 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Sculptor.  It appears asymmetrical to us because of our nearly edge-on viewpoint.  It is one of the closest galaxies to our Milky Way in our local group.

There are relatively few images of this galaxy on Astrobin which is surprising given the relative close proximity and angular size.  Therefore,  I didn't have many reference images to use to plan my processing workflow.  I experimented with many stretch combinations and settled on this one which is a fairly basic stretch.  It is an LRGB image but I blended in some Ha data into the red channel to highlight the star forming nebulous regions that are present in the arms of the galaxy.

My favorite features of the image are the many visible background galaxies.  Zooming in, you can find examples of many galaxy types. Some even with colored arms and sharp clarity.

The weather in Chile has been really cloudy.  Obstech is supposed to have 320 clear nights per year.  I have only been set up there since mid July and I recon we have had nearly a years worth of cloudy nights already!  Looking at historical data, this appears to be an anomaly.  But still, very frustrating.

Seeing has also been very poor this winter.  I have seen it as bad a 5" and averaging about 2.5".  This has definitely cost me some loss of detail in the image.  But, I am pretty satisfied with it none the less.  I am anxiously waiting for these famous clear and stable nights to return!
